Default No love for the first one out?

The Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 and its successor, the 7K1000.B, are getting no love these days. This is despite the fact that it's fast and efficient, runs cool and quiet, and is currently the cheapest drive around.
What's up with that?

Hello,

We didn't include Hitachi drives in this round-up because we couldn't find 1 TB models for sale on Newegg.com on the day we bought all the other drives. We reviewed 500 GB and lower versions from Hitachi drives and they performed poorly, as you can see here:

Hello,

Very interesting comparison, but what about the reliability ?
You should have a look to this french web site that gives an overview of the reliability of the most common computer components every 6 months. The variation of the reliability is not negligible at all ...

Hey Marc,

I will leave this kind of test for people that have the time, physical space and money to do them. Unfortunately we don't have the physical space to leave all components running "forever" 24/7... See our office pictures:

Cheers,
Gabriel.

In fact, they do not test the drives, they are using a maintenance database made accessible by a big reseller of PC components. I just found a similar site in english, and the numbers are similar: it looks like the reliability of Seagate models is significantly lower than the reliability of the Western Digital models for instance.

Kind regards,
Marc

Hum, interesting, as long as they factor in also the number of drives from each brand this reseller sold...

Gabriel.
