You say you "installed" a 40GB seagate drive, now was this drive previously writen to on a motherboard with a different BIOS manufacturer other then whom made you're current boards BIOS? A lot of the time with newer 478/775 motherboards you have to "repair install" you're Hard disks for new use with different BIOS'.

If this does'nt prove factual for you're case then their is another solution that may fix what could be causing you're issue.

There may be a problem with the registry, the place where the files are kept. This may have started due to a viral infection of some sort and will need to be corrected.

Here are some solutions you may want to look at depending on you're level of knowledge behind pc repair:

Basic User: You will need to seek a local repair shop and have them fix the registry to avoid furthur corruption.

Intermediate: Use a registry cleaner and if fails which is very likely to happen, reformat you're drives with an XP oem cd or recovery disc of some sort to start fresh.

Advanced/L33T: Do as i would and attempt to examine the registry location yourself, find the issues pertaining to youre problem and correct them manually.

Hi and welcome to our forums.

It could be anything since this symptom is too generic.

From my experience this looks like a problem with your memory module. I would start testing your system by removing your memory module and installing another one that I know that is working fine on another computer.

Cheers,
