First I just want to say thx to anyone willing to help me out and know that I appreciate any input I can get.

I am building a new gaming rig but I am totally confused about the different kind of motherboards and sockets out there.

I want to build a system that can handle the new games coming out and I want a stable system.

I have a budget of about 1000 dollars and will not buy a monitor. So if I could get any help with the following components I would be very happy:

1) Motherboard - what type of socket and why?
*AMD or intel ?
*What socket and why?
*Any suggestion on a specific motherboard?

2) Graphic card - thinking of the geforce 8600 gts

3)CPU

4)Suggestion of a psu : Hiper Type-R 580W perhaps?

I am particulary confused about the different kind of motherboards and what to think about when deciding on one. Secondly, do I need dual core and what about graphic cards in SLI mode? I don't want to be "stupid" and pay alot of money for nothing/little gain but I don't want to be stupid and buy a system that is old even before getting it.

Any suggestions, hints or any input at all is greatly appreciated!

With kind regards
Mats

the key to a 'gaming rig' is the graphics card, this is basicaly what the entire pc is structured around and to be frank the 8600Gts wouldn't cut it

(reserves space for a gaming rig post (going out in 5 have to get ready))

Hi reidy!

Looking forward to your post on this issue, previously I have bought prebuilt systems but never got satiesfied with what I got. But trying to put together my own system showed me that there are so many options and so much information to take in. Any help is appreciated because it will give me a direction and something to start from.

With thx
/Mats

Hi,

It depends a lot on how much money you have to spend. If money isn't an issue, you could go to the nearest computer store and buy the most high-end and expensive parts around...

I don't think GeForce 8600 GTS is a good option as well. There are entry-level high-end video cards on the same price range offering a higher performance, and Radeon X1950 Pro is a good example.

As for CPU, I recommend Core 2 Duo, it is faster and produces a lot less heat than competing products.

As for motherboard, it also depends a lot on your budget. Anyway, if you go for a Core 2 Duo, I recommend a P35-based motherboard, if you are looking more towards a more expensive board, or a nForce650i board, if you want to save some bucks.

Regarding SLI I think it is overrated. Why? Because for the price of two mid-range cards you can buy a good high-end model like GeForce 8800 GTS.

As for power supply, I am not familiar with the model you picked.

I hope this can help you, but I am sure other folks here may have a different opinion.

Cheers,
Gabriel.

CPU:

e6420 - 186$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115016

e6600 - 222$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115003

mobo:

MSI p965 platinum -127$ http://usd.xprice.ca/computing/motherboards/NC-MS-P965-PLAT.html

RAM:

2* Corsair value select pc5300 1GB DDR2 - 40$ *2 (80$)

HDD:

2* seagate barracuda 7200, 3Gb sata - 70$ * 2 (140$)

PSU: rosewill RP500 - 50$

Case, up to you as it down to personal preference, and also you might want to consider a more expensive PSU the rosewill, will cut it but its alway's good to be safe.

with the e6600 thats 923$ so with a half decent case, that takes you up to the 1k mark, with a very nice 'gaming' rig ;)
