Hey...thanks for helping!

I have an IMac with a Firewire input and I'd like to record (lots of) video through a consumer level HD camera directly into the computer. (I know I can record to the hard drive of a camera and then dump...but extra step and time I'd like to avoid.)

Here's the problem...the new generation of HD cameras no longer have firewire output, but most now have HDMI. Is there a way to take the data OUT of the camera on an HDMI and convert it to firewire to go IN to the computer?

I'm looking at trying to find a slightly older camera that does have firewire...but the new cameras are attractive, except for this issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks again,
Edie

Hello,

As far as I know this connection is not possible, because these two standards are not compatible and have completely different goals. HDMI is a standard to carry video signals and Firewire, like USB, is a standard to carry computer data signals.

You cannot record video from camcorders straight to your computer. You need to record them to the camcorder's media and then transfer the contents from this media to your computer. This is valid for both traditional digital camcorders and HD models.

Cheers,
Gabriel.
