Hi

I have an MSI KM4M-V mobo and curently have 512mb PC2100 memory.

Although the BIOS has options for 400MHz PC3200 Memory, the KM400 North Bridge apparently supports only up to PC2700.

If price is not a factor, am I better off installing PC3200 and possibly running it at a lower speed?

Also, does the memory bus run at the same speed as the FSB?

Grateful for any feedback

Chris

Hi,

There are two aways for generating the memory clock. Using the same FSB clock (which is more common) and using a separated clock generator (usually only on high-end motherboards targeted to overclocking). Using DDR400 on this motherboard isn't an issue. Since KM400 is a low-end chipset, the actual speed of the memory will be based on the FSB. So if you have a CPU running at 266 MHz (133 MHz x 2) externally, your memory will be accessed at 266 MHz even if it is DDR333 or DDR400. Unless your motherboard has a configuration to set the memory clock independently of the FSB clock, which I don't think it is the case.

Cheers,
Gabriel.
