Default help deciding cpu's here

I have a S1923WM compaq computer. with a A8N-LA (Nagami2L) mother board. i was reading and some people say, that i can use this processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103772
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+

but on the webpage to the manufacture it says i can only use a 4800+

i was also reading that it depends on my power supply, which brings me to my question, can i use the 6000+? since my power supply is a 500w. i had it changed it out to support a video card which i no longer have in my computer. but still have the power supply. and if not, what is the highest AMD processor i can get for my motherboard? thank you for any help you can provide.

your PSU sounds good and the manufacturer website probly hasnt been updated in a long time for your PC models CPU support so the 6000+ sounds fine as long as the socket type is the same

Thumbs down

Hi,
I just had a look at your M/B specs and it says it requires a socket 939 CPU (eg. works with older DDR 266/333/400 MHz Memory modules) but an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ is considered a socket AM2 CPU (eg. which only works with newer DDR2/533/667/800 MHz memory modules)so I its not gonna work sorry.

However if you can find an AMD Athlon 64 FX- 60 which runs @ 2.6GHz or even faster is the Athlon 64 FX- 57 running @ 2.8GHz those are considered the fastest socket 939's ever made.
Tomahawk out.

As Tomahawk wrote you'll need to look for socket 939 CPUs.
Unless you can get a used one cheaply it's probably not worth the upgrade.
Do you have an older CPU that you want to replace, or did you get the motherboard without CPU and want a CPU for it?

Cheers

well i was looking to originally replace my old cpu because it's readings were going hay wire, dropping as low as 333Mhz, so i was looking for a good processor to replace it with. i saw that one, and lol well after seeing the first person saying it should work, i went and bought it. needless to say though when i got it the pins were all bent to hell, so i'm sending it back waiting for the replacement. well then let me ask you, what kind of motherboard would i need to run that Cpu? and can i still use my harddrive, videocard (just bought another one) and fan, and ram for it? or will i have to buy new ram at the least for it? and thanks again for the help.

You'll need any motherboard with socket AM2 or AM2+ and new RAM type DDR2.

You should also check your PSU to have matching connectors. (20 or 24-pin ATX and 4 or 8-pin 12V for the CPU. There are adaptors available if you don't want to invest in a new PSU.)

All other components should be no problem, but you will have to do a "repair" of your OS. (Look for instructions on how to replace the motherboard with your OS.)

Cheers

Will work, with DDR2 RAM as noted in my previous post.

(And, of course, does require DDR2.)
