Default Print server working ok??

I wonder how to determine if my printserver (Dlink DP-300U) is working ok under Linux.

Since I cannot print from Linux (Ubuntu), but printing works fine from another computer running under XP, I did the following test:

from both computers I logged on to the printer server from the command line using ftp; I then sent a test file to the correct port, and watched the outcome:

$ftp <ip-address>
ftp> put <testfile> <port>

The test file is an ASCII file ("Hello World"), which has been created in Notepad under XP, and then was copied to Ubuntu using my memory stick. As you probably guessed, the file came out fine under XP, but, although accepted (!) when sent from Ubuntu, did not come out of the printer (if something goes wrong with the 'put' command ftp complains through an error message).

I think that by using ftp to print I totally bypass any printer setup that might not be correct, so this being a true test of the printserver functionality - right? Is there maybe another way to make sure there is a printserver problem, before I start spending money on investing in a new one?
