Very good review, I like the level of detail of your reviews.

I am especially interested in the Realtek audio hardware that allows the front panel jack to be used without killing the 7.1. It irks me to pay $200+ for a M/B (usually with Realtek sound) and find I can only use one or the other.

I have a question, of what use is the x16 mechanical x1 electrical slot? Is there any particular hardware that comes in the form factor, especially HTPC based? I've seen PCIe x1 video cards, but these had correspondingly small connectors.

Simple actually. This way you can plop in a x16 card and use it, or a 8x, or a 1x card, you aren't limited in this case.

Like Eagle1337 explained, x16 slots support x1, x4, x8 and x16 cards, even if their edge contact is smaller than the slot.
