Default WD RE4 not initialized

Got my 500GiB WD RE4 drive today as a primary drive for a LGA1150 desktop. BIOS recognizes it but it makes clicking noises when PC is booting up. It can't be initialized or formatted. I am using a SATA 3 cable.

Did I do something wrong? RE4 not suitable for desktop? Maybe need a SCSI controller? Wrong cable? Or faulty drive?

Drive was bought as new and came without jumpers.

Replace the drive where you bought it; it seems it is defective...

I must be having a bad run. This is my second WD drive that have to be RMAed this month. The seller replied that I should be getting my 1TB Black back by next week... failed after two days of usage and it's not even running 24/7. My expectations of these drives were very high and I have never expected them to fail so fast as I bought them new. I am getting very disappointed with WD.

Ironically, my four-year 160GiB blue and six-month 1TB Blue are running fine.

Default WD 160G IDE Initilaze problems

As I was doing this last build with my Intel board my old IDE HDD was not recognized during setup.

So I threw it in my other PC and ran the computer managment program then clicked storage to initialize and format the drive from there then re-installed that drive back in the other PC, problem solved

tomahawk out

Do you have an USB-SATA-controller for testing?

Do you have to read SMART-values (if the drive was recognized)

Were these drives from same seller? Maybe a "bad pallet", fallen drives?

The RE drives are like the caviar-drives with special FW for raid-controllers, these drives can be easier knocked out by the raid-controller in case of error. I would prefer the normal Caviar-drives if I donīt use raid

The RE4 was from another vendor. Today, I received the RMAed drive back and man, am I pissed. They gave me a WD 500GiB RE instead of a WD 500GiB RE4. I'm sending it back for a refund.
