The HD 6970 seems to be no more than okay for running benchmarks.
When using it for actually playing the games its a different story (as shown by [H]OCP). Then, depending on what game is played, it at worst match the GTX570, and in some cases (like F1 2010) even marginally outperform the GTX580.
The HD 6950 is typically about one level of AA behind the GTX570 in useful performance. Is that difference worth $50? That's up to the user to decide.
To me that method of evaluation says a lot more about the real performance than any canned benchmark, and both the HD 6970 and HD 6950 can be said to have great value.
