Question Replacing DVD Drive in a Recorder

I have a JVC DR-MV1S Set top DVD Recorder. I was always getting a DISC
ERROR message from the drive. Since it was out of warranty, I replaced the
drive inside with a Dual layer Drive Sony DRU-842A. The Recorder now works
with DVD-R disks. But with a Dual layer disk like DVD+R DL, the display panel on the unit displays DISC ERROR. I don't think I need a firmware upgrade, right ? The unit should recognize dual layer disks, since the new drive has that capability. Unless the JVC interface to the drive is the problem ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks..

It may be a compatibility issue, probably is a limitation of the JVC hardware, not of the DVD drive itself.
