Angry Random shutdowns

My computer has suddenly started randomly shutting down. It will not restart until I unplug the power cable for about 5 seconds and replug. It works fine until the next random shutdown. It has never done this before. I am running Windows XP Pro with service pack 3. I have an Intel Celeron 2.4 ghz CPU and 2 gigs RAM. The temp is 36-38C. I have looked at all the capacitators and none look damaged, motherboard and video and sound card. I thought maybe the power supply and replaced it. Still the same problem. Does anybody have any suggestions of what might be causing the problem.

What brand are the capacitors? Some of them (like OST, Teapo and Chemi-con KZG and KZJ) are notorious for failing with no visible signs whatsoever.

Please post your system configuration, i.e. list the hardware parts, their models, etc.

I don't know what happened. I thought I posted this. Anyway, here it is again.

CPU: 2.4 ghz Intel Celeron
Motherboard: VIA Technologies P4M266A-8235
another number on board: P4VMM2 REV 8.1
Power Supply: Max Power KY-400ATX
Primary Hard Drive: Western Digital WD3200AAJB-00TYA0
Video Card: ABIT ATI Raedon R9600
Sound Card: Creative Labs Model SB0570
RAM: PQ1 DDR-266 1gb (x2)
There is, of course, a monitor, printer, and external hard drive. If there's anything else needed, just let me know. Would it be easier to replace the motherboard, since this just started happening?

Hi,

Any defective component can cause the simptoms you described. Therefore, you may replace the motherboard just to find out that the problem is not with your motherboard. I'd recommend you to test each component individually at another computer. The problem you will face is that you computer is very old, and you probably won't find anyone with a similar system so you can test the parts. For the age of the computer, if I had the money, I'd simply buy a new and more updated computer.

Cheers,
Gabriel.
