Lightbulb Corsair HX650 V2 (HX650 Gold)

I haven't seen a (professional/expert) review for the HX650 V2 power supply unit anywhere (yet).

From user reviews, it seems many are apparently having issues with this PSU.

It would be very interesting to read an expert/detailed review of the HX650 V2 PSU and see what may be causing these issues.

Is there a review planned for this PSU? If not, please seriously consider doing a review as I believe it would benefit many current and future users.

Thanks.

We reviewed the 850 W version: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/artic...ly-Review/1602

Usually power supplies within the same series are based on the same platform.

Thanks for the comments.

I did read the review for the Corsair HX850 V2 power supply unit. From most user reviews, it appears that there hardly any issues with this particular model.

The model HX650 V2, however, seems to have a disproportionately and substantially higher number of issues compared to the 850W model.

Essentially the same platform? Yes, most likely.

However, given the higher number of dissatisfied users for the 650W model, it seems there are problems with this model for whatever reason(s).

I purchased the 650W model recently, but it was found to have two issues.

* A noisy fan (not the squeaking type noise frequently reported, but more of a fluttering/vibrating noise as though the fan was out of balance (possibly a bearing issue?)).

* A sparking main (large) capacitor! Not very commonly reported, but there have been a few reports of this occurrence.

My Corsair HX650 V2 PSU was returned and replaced with a Seasonic X-660 PSU.

It would be interesting to see a review of the 650W V2 model, to see what might explain the apparent issues.

Here is a post by Corsair that I found interesting.

Quote:
I am sorry but the components inside are from neither company and I am not at liberty to state which sub-contractor we are using to build our PSU's ATM. Sorry! Maybe Corsair George can comment on this one? .....

Again it does not matter who we use to Build the PSU's they are our designs internally and are not a copy of the subcontractors we use to build the units so it make no difference who we use to assemble the PSU. We may use their PCB but the components will be different internally. Also verified in that same article if read the whole article.

Thumbs up

Thanks Merman for the additional information!

At this stage,
it is suspected that perhaps, lower grade/less reliable components are being used within the HX650 V2 model PSU's. That could explain why many users are experiencing issues.

A detailed review of the HX650 V2 PSU would be extremely useful.

Thanks!

Seems very likely that it is based on the Seasonic G-650 (SSR-650RM). This site has already tested the 550W version, although it would obviously be nice to see it at 650W/have confirmation.

Even if you don't get a sample is Corsair getting secretive??? I may remember incorrectly but didn't you mention that Corsair didn't want to confirm what solid caps were being used???

Corsair is very friendly to us. The only "issue" we ever had with them was that they didn't want to tell us the OEM for the AX760i unit. The story you mention about the solid caps didn't happen, at least with us.
