TOSHIBA QOSMIO F10/2WLDEW laptop GPU repair

Hello,

I had a friend drop off this laptop for me to look at because the screen went crazy on her one day.I tried different ram sticks,resetting the bios diferent Hard drive nothing worked so I told her that's all I could do for her sorry all I knew is it was probably a faulty graphics chip. I read in some other forums that the NVidia GeForce FX Go5700 Chips had some manufacturing problems

Unfortunatley her warranty had just run out a few months before the graphics went blank and was going to cost her more than $1,000 CAD for Toshiba to repair if they could.

Then she sent the laptop to this local japanese electronic repair shop where they posted the pictures of the repair method very interesting stuff I can't understand Japanese but the pics tell the basic story the repair, the cost was very reasonable. This guy does these repairs as a hobby.


I think he baisically reset contact postioning and soldering of the GPU chip on the motherboard with a heat gun using the masking tape, and paper as a temperature control guide as not to make the repair too hot to burn the PCB in the motherboard. I'm guessing he also added a weight to apply pressure on top of the GPU during the heat up process not really sure. I don't know how he figured out it was a soldering assembly problem but it looks like his diagnosis was correct.

Well I just heard from my friend and she told me her laptop was broken again so it seems the repair didn't last that long... too bad. Good thing it didn't cost her that much to fix I think he charged her $15.00.
