I've spent some studying hard disks with a view to my next upgrade. I've been looking at various articles and setups. The new Raptor seems fast but very expensive. I wonder how it compares price/perforamnce against solid state drives. As these will decrease in value Q4 this year and early next year as manufacturing processes are refined. I've read articles that suggest these SSD will be 30% more expensive than main stream sata disks by 2010.

I would imagine you have to set the new raptor's up in RAID 0 to compete against SSD's. Would be interesting to see the results.

Also if you want my opinion dont buy a raptor to expensive for what it is. Setup 4 SATA 300 mainstream disks with 32mb cache. You'll have change and i'd imagine 5x the storage 128mb cache and better performance.

Still i'd love to see how 2/4 x 64gb SSD perform in RAID 0.

SSD's at this moment are targeted to laptops, not desktops.

They are very expensive and provide a ridiculous capacity.

We will, however, review one to see its performance in the near future. Stay tuned!

Hi all,

We made a mistake when we first published this review on 06/10/2008: we forgot to remove the compatibility jumper from our Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 hard disk drives, making them to work as SATA-150 devices instead of SATA-300 ones. We redid the benchmarking and the results were very different (higher performance with the jumper removed).

We just updated the review.

We ask our most sincere apologies for this error and we’d like to thank our reader Carvalhoso who pointed out this error to us.
